Summary/Abstract: Along with Missa pro defunctis (Requiem) and piano mazurkas, piano duos form the third artistically significant wave of the composer’s oeuvre. They were created between 1936 and 1951, when Maciejewski performed with Kazimierz Kranc and other pianists (S. Eckerberg, M. Penny, A. Portnoff). These compositions, representing three ontologically diverse types of music – his original creations (two concert pieces and four dance miniatures), arrangements (two collections consisting of 11 arrangements of folk melodies), and transcription (23 transcriptions of classic works) – are characterized by a richness of pianistic expression, a forceful emotive quality and mood-creation, as well as by a knowledge of sound capacities of two pianos in dialogue. The idiomatic qualities of Maciejewski’s piano duos are described from the perspective of their biographical and cultural contexts, genology, and their place and value in Polish musical culture and history of this wave of piano music.
